Chasing.... ((OPEN)) « Thread Started on Aug 18, 2008, 11:24am »
The alleys seemed quiet and inactive today. A single, solitary rat poked its nose out from its hiding place and cautiously emerged, on a hunt for food - namely, garbage.
Without warning, another creature leaped out of the shadows - a much larger one than the rat. Before he could escape, the rat squeaked in dismay as he found himself engulfed in a pair of strong paws. "Ha!" cried out Jehan triumphantly. "Gotcha!" He released the rat, but held his paw down on its tail so it couldn't escape. "Hmmm..." Jehan tapped his chin thoughtfully, deciding the fate of the smaller creature. When the rat turned and tried to bite his paw, he quickly clamped its jaws shut with his paw and kept it there. "I'm kinda hungry," he mused, "but rats carry diseases..."

((I will!)) Jemima walked in, heart heavy. She spotted Jehan debating about his meal. "Let it go. You can catch something healthier later." She sat down, eyes troubled. She thought Misto loved her...

Jehan spun around to face her, still keeping one paw around the rat. "Afternoon, Miss Jemima," he greeted, inclining his head in a half-gallant, half-impudent manner. "Lovely day, yes?" He frowned at her advice. "Now, true, I could let this little fellow go..." He poked the rat. "But the fact is, I'm hungry enough to eat a... no, no, you don't want to know. See, usually the humans throw me scraps, but today everyone's angry, and... Say, you don't look too cheery yourself. Is something getting your tail in a knot?" While Jehan had, unfortunately, a decided lack of concern for others' troubles, he was nonetheless perceptive. Nearly always in a good humor himself, it particularly struck him when someone else wasn't.

Jemima, being her sweet, shy self, nodded. "Oh, it's nothing you should be worried about." She flashed a smile, but knew anyone could tell it was fake.

Jehan shook his head wisely. "Best not to keep your feelings bottled up inside, Miss Jemima. Makes a body go cuckoo." He tapped the side of his head with on paw - the other remained on the rat. Jehan lowered his voice confidentially. "Anyone you feel like beating over the head with a two-by-four?" He had no clue what a two-by-four was, but from what humans said, it sounded like something big and heavy. "Or... do you want me to hit them over the head for you?" That'd be fun! But Jemima seemed more sad than anything, and Jehan knew nothing about talking to sad people. So maybe the best he could do was try to make her un-sad by saying funny things. Not that these were necessarily Jehan's thoughts; he was saying funny things, to be sure, but it may have been as much for his own amusement as for Jemima's.

Jemima laughed a little, even though she had no idea what a two-by-four was either. "Well, if you could stand my babbling for a little bit. . ." she trailed off, not knowing if she should share her feelings like this. Fro what she had heard, Jehan, wasn't much of a listener, and probably didn't appreciate heart-broken queens coming up to him.

Jehan nodded and smiled at her. "By all means. Babble. I'll listen." He would, too. If it weren't for the fact that he had nothing better to do, he'd not have asked her in the first place. He'd listen, though he probably wouldn't have any helpful advice to offer. "Would you like a rat?" he added, picking it up by the tail and holding it out towards her.

Jemima held back a disgusted face. "No, thank you." She continued on. "It's just, I saw Misto today with Opi. And they were really. . . comfortable. I was just, I don't know, upset. I thought Misto loved me..." she trailed off.

Jehan held back a groan. Oh, catnip, this was one of those tragic romance things... "Well," he said with an effort, "er...what made you think he loved you? Er, not that....I mean.... like, did he ever say that?"

Jemima held back tears. Her voice was barely a whisper. "He, he would always give me the most affectin, and, sometimes, he would come to my pets' home with me. That's when we found Mesmira."

Jehan scratched his head. "Who's Mesmira again?" he asked, hoping to get Jemima talking about something else. All this depressing romance stuff unnerved him.

Jemima looked up, seeing how confused Jehan was. "Oh, I shouldn't be rambling on about this, I'm probably boring you to death. Here, I should just go." She began to get up, walking back towards the junkyard.

Jehan thought of going after her, then shrugged his shoulders and sat back down, letting her go. If he went after her, he'd be expected to say something to make her feel better, or at least, "Oh, I can't do without your company!" - which wouldn't be true. Jehan could be alone, or with others, really made no difference to him. Except when he had something exciting or fun to do, in which case he'd find someone to join him. But Jemima wouldn't be a good companion at this moment; she'd only cry and make him feel depressed. She'd go back to the junkyard and find someone who knew how to deal with upset queens... Now about this rat.
((awww, Jehan's so insensitive. I nearly had him run after Jemima, then reconsidered, realizing he probably wouldn't do that...))
